The goal of this trip was to negotiate an agreement with the National Library of China (NLC). The NLC offered to sell digital rights to several rare copies of the Lienü zhuan and associated original documents. The NLC was willing to make digital copies of the documents and sell us permissions to publish them on the XWomen web site.
The group consisted of Anne Kinney (project director), Sarah Wells (project manager), and Ming Lung (East Asia librarian).
We had three meetings with members of the NLC Rare Books and Special Collections Department. Our primary contacts were:

We had written and forwarded a draft of a contract to Mr. Zhang before we left, and he and other Rare Book staff had been able to read through it and draw up list of items to discuss. Their main concerns were to identify quality control problems that are likely to arise when working with delicate documents and to discuss the copyright language. We settled on a production and delivery timeline and briefly discussed some technical issues related to our requirements for page images and textual mark-up.

We were able to resolve most issues to both sides' satisfaction, although we decided that we needed to return home and write up another draft of the contract. We wanted to consult with a UVa lawyer and digital rights expert for the exact language to be used in describing the permission and rights that we are purchasing from the NLC.
The NLC drew up a list of thirteen proposed texts for us. After eliminating some duplicates, we settled up on a set of eleven texts. The texts are shown below.
